In August 2021, the New York City Council granted $3.25 million to the Black Education Research Collective (BERC) to create a PK-12 Black studies curriculum and professional learning plan for New York City Public Schools. Led by Professor Sonya Douglass, this initiative established the Black Education Research Center at Teachers College, Columbia University. The Center aims to improve education by developing new knowledge in Black studies, culture, politics, and education.
